چکیده

This paper presents a new complete field mapping of glacial landscapes, landforms and sediments in the Faroe Islands, supplemented by observations from bathymetric maps Shelf. In addition, previous investigations Quaternary espe-cially Weichselian glaciation archipelago are reviewed. New cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages indicate that last extensive Islands occurred during Late Weichselian, most likely Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; c. 26.5–19.0 cal. ka BP), although Younger Dryas (c. 12.9–11.7 BP) age cannot be entirely excluded. Geomorphological provides background for reconstructing extent type Islands. The reconstructed appears to have had character an exten-sive valley glaciation, with several marine glacier termini. present southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, represents modern analogue lack raised coastal features also at protected sites, suggests postglacial isostatic uplift was smaller than post-LGM eustatic sea level rise. Numerical reconstructions carried out different extents Faroese suggest such limited crustal requires Shelf not extensively glaciated but it doubtless so least one glaciations.

Chlamydophila psittaci in Fulmars, the Faroe Islands

Chlamydophila psittaci was detected in 10% of 431 fulmars examined from the Faroe Islands. Analysis of ompA showed a sequence almost identical to that of the type strain. The origin of C. psittaci outbreaks in fulmars is discussed. Despite a high level of exposure, the risk for transmission of C. psittaci to humans is low.

High birth weights in prewar Faroe Islands.

Birth weights in the Faroe Islands are among the highest in the world. During the 1980s, infants born there had 200 grams higher mean birth weight than their Danish peers. Half of this diVerence could be attributed to a longer gestation (four days on average), half to a higher fetal growth rate. A high intake of seafood has been suggested to be a possible cause of this pattern. The findings of ...

Vitamin D in the General Population of Young Adults with Autism in the Faroe Islands

Vitamin D deficiency has been proposed as a possible risk factor for developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD). 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels were examined in a cross-sectional population-based study in the Faroe Islands. The case group consisting of a total population cohort of 40 individuals with ASD (aged 15-24 years) had significantly lower 25(OH)D3 than their 62 typically-developi...

Autometallographic tracing of mercury in pilot whale tissues in the Faroe Islands.

OBJECTIVES Autometallography (AMG) was applied for tracing mercury in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) harvested in the Faroe Islands. RESULTS Ample mercury accumulation was found in kidney tubules, in contrast to the largely unstained glomeruli. Hepatocytes, as well as liver macrophages, exhibited high mercury uptake. The muscle tissue accumulated only scant amounts of mercury, ...
